WebSite Basics

A Professional website makes a positive statement about you and your business. In today's increasingly interconnected world, websites are the number one way to communicate, market and provide information. Companies all over the world are quickly realizing that websites can be seen from anywhere with internet accesses and are much cheaper then other marketing options. The task of creating a website and establishing a presence on the internet can be daunting to say the least. So how does one go about making a website? Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering a web design project:

You can consider a domain name as the identity of your site. This is the address that you type in to the address bar of your web browser to go to a website. (Example: As well as the Domain name being your sites location on the internet, it also can be the host name for your email addresses. (Example: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

If you don't have a domain name yet, don't worry. Finding a domain name is as simple as finding words that are relevant to your company or field, and seeing if they are already taken. Just type a possible domain name into your internet browsers address bar and try visiting it. If the domain name is not taken, your internet browser will tell you that the address you entered could not be found. If your browser navigates to a web page, this means that the Domain name is already in use. You can consider a different name or you can try ending it with something other than a .com (Commercial).

Other possible endings are:

  • .net (networks)
  • .org (Organization)
  • .us (United States)
  • .coop (Cooperatives)
  • .info (Unrestricted use)
  • .biz (Businesses)
  • .pro (Professionals)
  • .name (Individuals)

Collecting Content

Communication is everything. Creating a website is a back and forth process between you (the client) and us (the web developer). Many clients don't realize that designing a web site is only half the battle. Information that is relevant to your company is needed in order for your website to be made.

  • Content / Text
  • Pictures / Graphics

Don't be discouraged about this process. Even a brochure or other marketing materials can provide an ample amount of information.

One thing many people are not familiar with is how much it will cost to make a website. This all depends on it's size, functionality and features. An average website will cost between $1000- $2000 where as larger, more advanced sites, can be significantly more. This is a reasonable expenditure for a well made website that can be accessed anytime all over the world. When compared to other advertising materials an interactive professional website is worth every penny.
